The Castration of the Strong Male Role Model on Network TV
or
Where have you gone to John Wayne???
by D Michael Waller

Where have they all gone? Men that were men on TV. What happen to the Strong Male Role Models like John Wayne, Steve McQueen, Chuck Conners and James Arness that we had when we were kids? Who decided that there was no longer a need for these role models for today's youth on network television? Who decided to castrate the strong role models into the GenderBenders that they are today???

It is funny how you don't miss something till it is gone. For the most part, it disappears gradually over time till one day you realize that it is no more. Maybe it is due to the changing times or a change in taste or style. Or maybe it is because of an agenda that we are not aware of.

When I was growing up, there were TV shows that I always looked forward to watching. Sometimes it was with my dad or with friends. Shows like Bonanza, Rawhide, Gunsmoke, Wanted Dead or Alive, The Rifleman, and The Untouchables. Actors like Lorne Greene, Clint Eastwood, James Arness, Chuck Conners, Robert Stack and Steve McQueen. These are the stars I remember from my earliest years. My thoughts of what a man was, on how he carried himself and the values that he had was influence from these shows. They mirrored my own father in the many ways. These Men along with our Sports Hero's like Mickey Mantle and Johnny Unitas were our role models growing up. These were the roles that we would emulate on the school grounds and in our backyards.

During the 60's we had shows like Combat with Vic Morrow, Daniel Boone with Fess Parker, Hawaii Five-O with Jack Lord, Mannix with Mike Conners. All of these were strong role models. Even today, I remember the tough as nails Jack Lord on Hawaii Five-O and and the courage of Vic Morrow, Mike Conners who never quit till the job was done and the values of Fess Parker on Daniel Boone. One thing there all had in common was an uncompromising sense of morals and values.

Which brings me to today. Who will my grandson look up to??? Who will be his John Wayne, Steve McQueen or Clint Eastwood? I look at today's TV and it makes me sick to see how the lines between men and women have become blurred. It is no longer cool to be a real man in this country. No longer cool to stand up for what you believe in. No longer cool to have a sense of morals and values that may offend a minority of the public. What happen to having pride in what and who you are? What happen to being true to yourself even if it is not the popular stance.

I wonder what my father and men like him who left their blood on Normandy Beach and the beaches of Iwo Jima would think about the state of affairs with Television and Movies. I wonder how they would react to see how our moral fiber has decayed into the state that it is in.

I wonder if there would be a place for someone like John Wayne in today's world. I wonder if Bonanza and Rawhide would be boycotted by Peta. Or Gunsmoke and The Rifleman would be banned by the left for its' display of guns? Or Mannix and Hawaii Five-O would be sued by the ACLU?

Where have you gone John Wayne??? We need you to stand up for us that still believe in a way of life that we called being an American. A way of life that is now looked down upon. a way of life that isn't cool anymore, a life that is dying before our eyes.

Please Ms Hollywood, keep your male role models that are in touch with thier feminine side, who really don't know if they are gay or not, who love to iron their clothes and decorate other peoples houses,,, keep them all,,,, just let me have my heros,, I would much rather be in the company of men like John Wayne, Clint Eastwood and Steve McQueen,,,,,
,,,,,deal me in boys,,,,,, 5 card stud?,, I'll take a cold Jax, thanks,,,,,,,
